What to Expect

As a consultant coaching clients through the KonMari decluttering process, I aim to:

  • Help people meet their personal goals
  • Empower clients so they have confidence to do it themselves and maintain it over time – through skills built and practiced with intention.

KonMari Consultant Role

  • My specialty is guiding clients through the KonMari Method of decluttering created by Marie Kondo – tidying “festivals” (full home declutter) in particular.
  • In this process, the person first takes time to envision their ideal lifestyle – how they want their life to look, feel and be like.
  • Then they commit to an intensive process of systematically going through their own belongings category by category, choosing to keep only what sparks joy for them and items that fit into their ideal lifestyle, letting go of the rest with gratitude.
  • I help clients go through each of their belongings, and support them to develop their “joy check muscle” (their ability to choose what sparks joy for them – what fits into the type of lifestyle that they truly want for themselves).
  • This process can take anywhere from 3-6 months to up to a year on average if the person puts in a committed effort (ex. a session may be 3-5 hours once/week); depending on the number of personal belongings and decision speed.
  • Marie refers to this process as a “tidying festival” because it is a special, one time event that, though it does require ongoing maintenance, the tools and habits learned support people to manage their belongings in a way that redoing the entire process repeatedly isn’t likely necessary.
  • Hiring me is kind of like hiring a personal trainer: I am there to guide, support and motivate you. What you get out of the process depends on you in terms of your commitment, time and effort you put in.
  • I won’t make any decisions for clients on what to keep or discard. I won’t throw away any of their belongings or guilt them into doing so. If you go through and touch each of your belongings and each one truly sparks joy for you, by all means, you will keep all of those items! It is mainly about the conscious decision to keep each item and display or store it mindfully, as well as building a sense of gratitude for the things we own and how they support us in our lives.
  • We build up from easiest (clothing) to hardest (sentimental items) so you will gradually build your skill in the joy-checking practice. This is a skill that you will be able to continue to make use of well after the project is over!

What I Do

  • I collaborate closely with the client: I help clients meet their personal goals related to their space, and encourage them to practice and apply what they’re learning in their home tidying process to other things in their life.
  • I support the client to make their own decisions
  • I offer some organization suggestions for clients to try out
  • I encourage environmentally friendly decluttering (resources, tips such as reusing + repurposing over purchasing when able)
  • I encourage trying out new organization systems for enough time to observe that it really works for you before purchasing higher quality or prettier organization systems (ex. bins/baskets)
  • I share self development and habit formation tips and information
  • I recommend other services that clients could hire to supplement our work as per clients’ wishes
